Penumbra (2007 R. Rothschild)

The light dims and echoes out against the stars,
the night spins a web of all the sorrows that we are.
The mountains, in silhouette they do appear.
Beloved - the keeper of the summer night is here.

The newborn moon, penumbra:
the Earth reveals her in all the fullness of her bloom,
the lover at the opening of the tomb.

Come away now from the sun, from the brightness of your weeping,
for the summer night is come and the shadows all are breathing,
where the past has come undone and the future still is sleeping.
Though she may seem far away, in the mirror you will find her,
waiting underneath the grey in the darkness of your eyes there,
for the light to burn away and the night to come unbind her, unbind her.

A brightness that holds a shadow in its flame,
a doorway that opens on the night air and the rain.
I know you through all the places we have come,
I hold you to my shoulder in the growing light of dawn.

The waning moon, penumbra:
the Earth reveals her in all the fullness of her bloom,
the lover at the opening of the tomb.

Disappear into the sun, in the brightness of your weeping,
for the summer night is gone and the shadows all are fleeing,
where the past has come undone and the future still is sleeping.
And though she may seem far away, in the mirror you will find her,
waiting underneath the grey in the darkness of your eyes there,
for the light to burn away and the night to come unbind her, unbind her.
